 Community Cupboard

Welcome

The Community Cupboard is a school-based, client choice pantry available for families in need of assistance who have children attending District #100 schools.  Pantry hours are every Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and is located inside the Boone County Center at 1320 East Avenue, Belvidere (corner of East Avenue and East Sixth Street).

Shannon Hansen Director (815) 544-8528

Through a partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank and a grant from Target Stores, the Belvidere School District opened the only school-based food pantry in Illinois on February 10, 2011.

This client-choice pantry operates every Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. (including summer months) and is available to any family in need of assistance with students attending District #100 schools.  No proof of need is required, but clients are encouraged to bring bags, laundry baskets, or boxes to carry food.  Individuals may receive food one time per month.

The Community Cupboard does not purchase its food.  Rather, the Northern Illinois Food Bank makes food and products available to member agencies, and the agencies contribute to the cost of purchasing, receiving, sorting, cleaning, warehousing, and delivering items by paying a shared maintenance fee based on the weight of the individual products.  The Community Cupboard pays .18 per pound, which is less than what it would cost to purchase items at a discount store.

The Community Cupboard provides food to approximately 200 different households per month.
