Response to Intervention. Changes in federal and state laws have directed schools to focus more on helping all children learn by addressing problems earlier within the general education setting. These new laws emphasize the importance of providing high quality, scientifically-based instruction and interventions, and hold schools accountable for the adequate yearly progress of all students. This new process of providing interventions to students who are at risk for academic or behavioral problems is called Response to Intervention, or RtI.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports, also known as PBIS, is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. PBIS sets and teaches clear behavioral expectations, incorporates expectations into the curriculum, uses data to make decisions, aligns data with behavioral supports, uses research-based strategies to teach and reinforce skills, and reduces reactive disciplinary measures and helps to prevent academic/social failure.
