Beginning next year, incoming kindergarten students will have the option to be placed into a dual language program at Seth Whitman Elementary School.
Classroom makeup will be 50% English speakers and 50% Spanish speakers. The curriculum will be the same as in any other kindergarten class in the district, but 1/2 of the instruction will be given in each language. Students will learn to read, write, listen, and speak in two languages.
Seats will first be given to students whose home school is Seth Whitman. If seats remain, a screening and application process will be used for students living outside of Whitman's attendance area.
Seth Whitman Elementary School was chosen for the dual language program based on space and the fact that 160 of its current students participate in an after school Spanish Club.
