BELVIDERE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL CREST

The focal point of the main entrance to Belvidere North High School is the crest with its vivid colors and symbols. The design is the work of a committee of teachers, community members and students who were charged with capturing the various aspects of a comprehensive high school.

The school colors are interwoven into the crest with navy blue forming the oval segment. Vegas gold and scarlet red are highlighted within the various symbols.

The coat-of-arms captures the four areas essential to a successful high school. The shaking hands portray the fact that a school is a microcosm of our society. We live in a diverse country, diverse community and a diverse school. A meaningful school experience requires an understanding and acceptance of that diversity.

The mask and lyre represent the fine arts in the school’s curriculum. America’s schools are challenged to promote the culture of the nation. Once again, diversity plays an important role in the culture of the country. The arts add immeasurably to the students’ total education.

Student activities and athletics are symbolized by the winged feet. These programs play an important part in the development of the total student. The qualities essential to becoming a successful adult such as sense of team, leadership, loyalty and integrity, are developed within the student who actively participates in these areas.

The fourth symbol, the cap and diploma, represent the academic goal for each student, which is to graduate, knowing that graduation is both an ending and a beginning.

Finally, the flaming torch with the year 2007 serves a dual role, with the year signifying the opening of the school and the torch representing knowledge and learning. The students of Belvidere North will need to commit themselves to a life of continuous learning in the pursuit of knowledge.

The placement of the crest in the entrance of the school accentuates to the students and community the true values and goals of the school. Having the crest be one of the first symbols one sees upon entering the building communicates the total education of diversity, fine arts, student activities and knowledge, which will lead to graduation and a life long journey of learning.
