At Belvidere Central our Encore class covers 4 areas in Family and Consumer Science over the three years.  Each grade level has its own course description and an outline of the material covered.  There is very little homework assigned for any of the grades. All supplies are listed.

Grade 6th  

Course Description: 
Students will be introduced to Interior Design and scaled drawings.  They will explore the careers that are related to these fields.  Student will learn how to draw a room to scale using blueprint markings for doors and windows.  Students will apply the scale drawing and elements of design as they create the Ideal Bedroom.  Students will demonstrate their individuality in selecting fabrics to personalize their rooms as they construct an accent pillow and locker caddy.
                       

 SUPPLIES NEEDED

Students may order kits for both projects.  The kits are complete with material, thread and instructions.  The priceof the kits are under $7.00.  Students will make their selection and a price will then be determined.

If Students and parents wish to shop for supplies, for the pillows:
1/2 yard of cotton fabric, thread to match and 1 large bag of fiberfill.  If they would like to make a larger pillow, for each 1/2 yard they will need at least 1 bag of fill.
For the locker caddy:
1/3 yard of material, 1/3 yard of complementary material for pockets, thread to match and 1 foot of 1/2 inch Velcro.

Seventh Grade

Course Description
During this 9-week course we will focus on wellness.  The United States Department of Agriculture Team Nutrition has set goals to improve the health of children.  Students will investigate why making good choices now is important to achieving a healthy life. They will evaluate their diets and work on setting goals to achieve the goals of Team Nutrition.  Students will be introduced to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Students will work safely in the kitchen applying correct sanitation procedures as we follow recipes that meet our goals.  Students will learn about:  recipes as they prepare a variety of products, the lab equipment, correct table setting, proper manners, food label regulations, new technology in the food industry, careers in the food industry and eating disorders.

Eighth Grade

Course Description:
Students will be exploring the world of work.  Students will begin by determining their values, skills, likes and dislikes.  They will explore the changing face of careers as we enter the new century.  They will determine what impact these changes have on their future.  Students will also look back over the past 5 decades and delve into what has impacted the work world and learn from those who worked during that time.  Students will investigate a career of interest and learn how to research that career.  They will write letters, research the internet, use available books from the library and then create a power point explaining what they will be doing in that career, how to prepare for the career and the future out look for their career.  During this time the class will establish a small business and operate the business to better understand entrepreneurship.

 Objectives:
Create short and long term goals from their personal assessment of interests, skills, values and aptitudes.  Extrapolate from career charts the importance of growth and change over the past 5 decades.  Read and reflex on daily quotes about the world of work.  Read articles from the internet about the future of work and determine how this could have an affect on their future.  Interview a person of their choice and write a summary of their work history.  Explain how basic skills-reading, writing, math, science, speaking, and listening-contribute to success at work.  Discuss why computer skills are essential in the workplace.  Discuss how to prepare for a job interview and make a good impression.  Prepare a resume for a position in the classrooms business.  Participate in a mock interview.  Establish and operate a small business using embroidery sewing machines.  Demonstrate actions of a responsible employee. Create a Power point on a career of choice.

Career Research Assignment
Create a power point.  You need to prepare at least 1 slide for each question below. (6 of the 8 questions need to be answered.)
1.     Explain what you will be doing when you achieve this career.  The nature of the job.
2.     What personal resources (skills, abilities, interests) do you need for this job?
3.     What basic life skill would you use in this career? 
         (Basic math, reading, writing, speaking, listening, team work, decision-making, planning, thinking critically and asking questions.)
