Belvidere, IL Monday, March 15, 2010 – As of February 28,
the State of Illinois is $2.8 million behind in its payments to the
Belvidere School District. The district expects to receive two out of
four categorical payments this fiscal year. In addition, the state
plans to reduce the amount of money paid to districts per student by 17%
next year (which translates into at least a $2 million less for
Belvidere), may eliminate funding for pre-k programs, and may reduce the
money paid to districts for reading programs, special education, and
bilingual programs.
In
response to these state funding issues and their impact on the
District’s 2010-2011 budget, the Board of Education voted this evening
to release 57 first, second, and third year teachers as part of a
reduction in force. The Board also voted on administrative
assignments for the 2010-2011 school year, which assignments will
recognize a savings of $250,000 for the district in FY11.
