Unit 1 - Learn Symbols
Microtype is a computer program used to help students with keyboard skill building. Students use Microtype to learn the location and uses of the symbols on the top row of the keyboard.
Unit 2 - Toolbar Review (Bold, Center, Alignment, Etc)
Students review the functions of the Microsoft Word Toolbars. They create a party invitation and party menu using the toolbar functions.
Unit 3 - Personal Letters
Students learn how to format personal letters. They type three different letters pertaining to different subjects. Letters are typed from copy, so it is very important for students to keep their eyes on the copy they are typing from. Students are graded on typing accuracy (points are deducted for typing errors). Students are tested on the parts of a letter.
Unit 4 - Proofreading Skills
Students learn the meaning of basic proofreading marks. These marks are used on their graded assignments. Students do a few worksheets reviewing the uses of the marks. They then take a paragraph and have to find the errors. This not only gives them practice with the marks' uses, but also gives them practice with basic rules of the English language. They also type a few documents that have the marks in them. Students are quizzed on proofreaders marks.
Unit 5 - Internet
Many students have used the Internet before, but most of them do not understand what the Internet is and how to search for things properly. One day of this unit is spent discussing what the Internet is and how to use it properly. Topics discussed include: search engines, evaluating websites, message manners, and history of the Net. After the discussion, students are directed to a website called CyberSmart Curriculum, which has assignments that help them to understand the Internet. Then students do two assignments in which they have to use the Internet to find information about certain topics. Students are tested on Internet terms.
Unit 6 - Tables
Students use Microsoft Word to create tables. Students discuss the uses of tables and learn about organizing data in a table.
Unit 7 - Short Reports
Students learn how to format a short one-page report using Microsoft Word. They copy a report that has already been typed, so it is again important that they keep their eyes on the copy. Students also learn how to type an outline and a cover page for a report.
Unit 8 - Newsletter
Students create a one or two page newsletter in Microsoft Word. They explore the many features of Word including columns, borders, clip art, font color, and many others.
Unit 9 - PowerPoint
PowerPoint seems to be a favorite unit for many students. We learn how to use this program to create a presentation. One day is spent talking about the rules of PowerPoint and good presentation techniques. Then the students use their creativity to create a PowerPoint presentation about the history of computers.
