Team Liberty Takes a Trip to Egypt

Students on Team Liberty showed their amazing artistic abilities and creativity recently while working on pyramids and ziggurats.  Kids used anything from sugar cubes and cheese-its to Styrofoam and legos.  As we learned many pyramids were the target of robbers, so some students built in traps to catch thieves.  When we had the expected accident, which damaged a model, we just wrote it off to the structure being ransacked by thieves.  Ask your student to pronounce King Tut's name and to tell you a few things about him.  We enjoyed visiting Egypt.

What has four sides and is like stairs used to worship Gods?

A Ziggurat!

What do ziggurats look like?  Ziggurats are made of mud bricks stacked on top of each other like stairs.  On the inside
there are walls that divide the ziggurat into rooms.  A ziggurat will usually have six to ten rooms.

What did people do with ziggurats?  Ziggurats are used for sacrificing people and animals to please the Gods.  People also had rituals to make a new ruler in a ziggurat. They worshiped gods like “The Mud Brick God” because their buildings, gates, and walls were made of mud bricks.  The people worshiped gods of the things that were important to them.

How is a ziggurat made? It takes two to ten years to make one.  It takes that long because to make the brick, they dry the brick, put them in the right spot, and put mud in the openings to seal them and keep them in place. Then they make the walls.

Now that you know what a ziggurat is, you can worship the candy, video games, sugar, and ice cream Gods!

September 8, 2005

Dear Survivor of Hurricane Katrina,

Hello.  I’m Nathan and I go to Belvidere South Middle School.  It’s actually by Chicago, Illinois.  Belvidere is a small but fast growing town.  I play football and baseball here.  My football team is undefeated.  I am in heavyweight and play corner.

I envy you for your courage through this disaster.  You’re probably scared and terrified, but I wish this letter takes your mind off of Katrina.  I’m very sorry if you lost anyone through this hurricane.  I hope you’re okay and we will do as much as possible to help you.  I hope this letter takes your mind off of the catastrophe.

Sincerely,

Nate
