SOCIAL STUDIES

Welcome To BSMS Staff Handbook School Report Card PVO

Team Independence puts a focus on responsibility, respect, and courage; the team motto.  We foster students' responsibility for behavior and work, students' respect for staff and one another, and students' courage for maintaining high academic and behavior standards.

Eighth grade social studies is the continuation of the seventh grade curriculum.  The time period covered is from Reconstruction to the present.  Some of the topics covered during the year include the American West, Industrial Era, World War I, Great Depression, World War II, Cold War, Civil Rights Era, and the Reagan years.  Students will work on note taking, using and understanding the social studies vocabulary, reading comprehension, and essay writing.  Thematic projects using primary sources will be offered at various times during the year.  Some examples of thematic projects include using the computer lab to work on Web quests, a research paper, and the Family History project.
