Belvidere South
recently sent their MathCounts team to compete against other
local schools in the Chapter competition of the national
MathCounts competition. Four team members and one alternate
tested their math and problem solving knowledge in a series of
questions. The Sprint round consisted of 30 questions to be
done in 40 minutes without the aid of a calculator. Each
problem counted 1 point toward the team and individual total.
Then the Target round was 4 sets of 2 questions, each taking 6
minutes. These counted 2 points each. Then the Team round was
10 problems to be done in 20 minutes with each problem
counting as 2 points toward the Team total. The final part of
the competition was the Countdown round which was just the top
10 individuals matching each other head-to-head in a
stepladder format.
Eight teams competed
with BSMS finishing in sixth place. While not a great
performance, it was a good experience for those involved.
