2024 Scholarships

 

BHS Graduates

Graduating D100 seniors will have the opportunity to apply for multiple scholarships thanks to many generous donors.  Applications are being accepted between February 1st and February 21st.

Information on how to apply has been shared via ParentSquare/StudentSquare to all current D100 seniors and their parents/guardians.  Students who are selected to receive a scholarship will be invited to our annual Scholarship Awards Night which will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16th, in the Performing Arts Center at Belvidere Hight School.

Scholarships are subject to change at anytime at the discretion of the donor(s).


 

Advanced Technology Center

The Advanced Technology Center scholarship is an award offered to students interested in pursuing careers in Welding, Mechatronics, or CNC Machining. A partnership with Rock Valley College and District 100 will allow students the opportunity to complete the Industrial Welder certificate, Fundamentals of Mechatronics certificate, or CNC Lathe or Mill Operator Level One credential.

All three programs are offered at the Advanced Technology Center in Belvidere. Students who are awarded this scholarship will have their tuition, materials, and course fees covered in partnership with Rock Valley College. This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in entering the workforce quickly after high school. (The number of scholarships available are: Welding - 30, Mechatronics - 30, CNC Machining - 10)

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Enroll in one of the described programs by the upcoming fall semester.

 

Alden and Dorothy Perkins

Two scholarships will be offered annually – one to students seeking a degree in education and the other to students seeking a pharmaceutical degree.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be planning to pursue an education or pharmaceutical degree.
  • Must have 3.0 GPA or higher.

Applicants are required to share why they plan to pursue a degree in education or pharmaceutical science.

Children of Midland State Bank employees are not eligible to apply.


 

American Legion Auxiliary Boone Unit 77

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be graduating senior planning to attend any type of post secondary school,

Applicants are required to share a one page essay on how they will utilize their major/field of study to help the Veteran Community and/or Active Service People.


 

American Legion Boone Post 77

This Scholarship is available to either a male or female student who will be attending a college of their choice or is continuing the next year in college. The criteria used for the selection is based on GPA, community and church service, school activities, and service, and honors received.  A minimum of one scholarship will be awarded per high school.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be attending college next school year.

Applicants are required to share how their future degree will help to serve those who are serving or have served. 


 

American Legion Trade/Technical School

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be attending a trade or technical school.
  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher

Applicants are required to share a one page essay on how their chosen major/field of study can be used to help active service persons and/or veterans.


 

Angela Osterberg Memorial

Angela Osterberg graduated with the Class of 1999 from Belvidere High School.  She played a variety of sports and often played the flute before football and basketball games. She was a kind and caring person who made everyone she met feel loved and special. Angie worked multiple jobs, as a single mother to her daughter, while attending college at Rock Valley and earning her Associates Degree. During her time on this earth, she made the world a better place by seeing the good in everyone and sharing her kind and caring heart with those who needed it the most.  This scholarship is given by the family of Robert J. Osterberg, Sr. 

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must attend a technical training school for the trades or a 2 year community college, with preference given to students attending Rock Valley College

Applicants are required to share a 100-250 word essay on how kindness and compassion impact mental well being is required.


 

Belvidere Bucs Booster Club

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant must be a Belvidere High School Graduating senior.
  • Family must be a dues-paying and active member of the Belvidere Bucs Booster Club.
    • The family must be active in the Booster Club, which includes volunteering as needed, for a minimum of two years. Students must have a minimum of ten documented volunteer hours either with the Boosters or elsewhere within the community per year.
  • Applicants must be a senior athlete or active in a school sanctioned club/activity.
  • Applicant must attend a 2-year or a 4-year accredited college, university, or technical school within the 12-month period subsequent to the current school year.
  • Applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Applicants are required to include an essay using 750 words or less explaining:

  • The value of volunteerism within the community
  • Their goals and future plans
  • How they and their family are active members of the Belvidere Bucs Booster Club.

Documentation of volunteers hours and two letters of recommendation are also required. One letter must be from one of their BHS coach/club advisors and one must be from a BHS teacher.


 

Belvidere Education Association

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Pursue a career in teaching or other field in education.
  • GPA and financial need may be considered.

Applicants are required to provide a one page summary describing the grade level and subject they would like to teach and why they chose to pursue the field of education.


 

Belvidere Lions Club

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant has been accepted by an accredited college or university.
  • Applicant has demonstrated good citizenship and has contributed to the welfare of the school, his or her classmates, and society.
  • Applicant ranks in the upper one-third of his or her graduating class and demonstrates a need for financial assistance.
  • Applicant has not received any other scholarship at the time this form is submitted.

 

Belvidere Officers Association - Larry Wirth Jr.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • A graduating senior who is interested in a career involving public safety.
  • Has a financial need.
  • GPA between 2.8 and 3.25.

Applicant must provide a brief statement regarding why they should be awarded this scholarship.  Applicant must be willing to attend a personal interview if requested.


 

Belvidere Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 1569

Requirements/Criteria:

This application is open to both senior male and senior female applicants. Preference shall be given to a career interest in public safety. The following items are required of the applicant to be eligible for this award:

  • Financial need.
  • Resident of Boone County.
  • Must attend a personal interview if requested.
  • Scholarship must be used within two years of receipt.

Applicants are required to briefly explain in what manner this scholarship will aid them in achieving their education goals, a list of advanced and college prep courses taken and the cost of tuition.


 

Belvidere Rotary Club

This Scholarship provides financial assistance to graduating high school students pursuing advanced training and/or certification. Preference will be given to individuals pursuing advanced training and/or a certification that is not a traditional 4-year degree at a college or university. Preferred certifications and training could include but are not limited to: Electrician, Hairstylist, Coder, Real Estate Agent, Copywriter, Firefighter, Flight Attendant, Optician, or Paralegal.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Consideration will be given to: Following the Rotary Creed of service above self, demonstrating leadership, participation in school and community activities, and good citizenship.
  • Financial need is not a prerequisite but a consideration. A primary intention of this scholarship is to reward students dedicated in the area of service to the community, for their accomplishments.
  • The Belvidere Rotary Club Scholarship Committee may require personal interviews with students prior to final selection in awarding said scholarship.

Applicants are also required to submit an essay of 300 words or less answering the following how will this scholarship assist you in reaching your goals and what your favorite volunteering experience was, and why. Applicants may add an additional paragraph explaining their financial need to their essay.

The Belvidere Rotary Club Scholarship committee may require personal interviews with students prior to final selection in awarding said scholarship.


 

Belvidere Rotary Club - Walter “Bud” Schiltz

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Consideration will be given to: Following the Rotary Creed of service above self, demonstrating leadership, participation in school and community activities, and good citizenship.
  • Financial need is not a prerequisite but a consideration. A primary intention of this scholarship is to reward top scholars for their accomplishments.
  • The Belvidere Rotary Club Scholarship Committee may require personal interviews with students prior to final selection in awarding said scholarship.
  • Applicants may include a paragraph explaining their financial need.

Belvidere Tornado Cross Country

Coach Rick Menge has been the Belvidere Tornado Running Club coach since 2009. Coach Rick coaches athletes in the Belvidere area ranging in age from 6-18. The Tornados XC program services approximately 80 of the Belvidere area youth each year.

This scholarship will be awarded to two deserving young student athletes. The choice will be made by a scholarship committee based upon coaches’ input and student essay.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must have competed as part of the Belvidere Tornados Youth Cross Country Team between the ages of 6 and 18. Applicant must have competed in at least one race as a Belvidere Tornado XC Team Athlete. Applicant does not have to currently be a Cross Country runner (for either the school team or the Tornados).
  • Evidence of good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
  • Must be planning to attend college or trade school after graduation to receive scholarship.
  • Preference will be given to a runner who will continue to participate in Cross Country at the collegiate level.

Applicant is required to include short essay explaining how running and being a part of a team has impacted their life as well as a letter of reference from a coach or teacher that should address the following:

  • Is there a word that best describes this student athlete Please explain.
  • Describe the student athlete’s leadership qualities and dedication to your team and/or classroom. Please provide any specific stories to describe this person.
  • Why do you feel this student is deserving of being the recipient of this scholarship?

 

Belvidere USBC Youth Bowling

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant must have participated in the Belvidere Youth Bowling Program.
  • Applicant must be going to a school or college for further education in the following school year.
  • Applicant must not have participated in any adult sports.

Applicants are required to provide a short essay stating how this scholarship will assist them in their educational goals.


 

Belvidere Woman’s Club

Two $1,000 scholarships will be given.  One to a Belvidere High School senior and one to a Belvidere North High School senior. 

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be accepted by an accredited college, university or technical school.
  • Shall have been active in extra-curricular, civic or cultural activities.
  • Must be in the upper half of the class.

Applicants are required to share in what manner this award will aid them in achieving their educational goals in 100 words or less.


 

Belvidere Youth Baseball

Belvidere Youth Baseball is a non-profit organization providing baseball and softball programs for Boone County Youth since 1958. BYB wishes to encourage students who plan to continue playing baseball or softball at the college level. Up to two scholarships will be awarded each year.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must have played baseball or softball at BYB
  • Must have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0
  • Must have played baseball or softball in high school
  • Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university
  • Must be planning to play baseball or softball in college

Applicants are required to share the number of years they have played baseball or softball at BYB and in high school. Applicants should include any parent involvement with BYB while they were a player (coach, volunteer, board member, etc.)


 

BHS Performing Arts Boosters & Performing Arts Students

This scholarship to graduating seniors of involved in performing arts (i.e. - band, choir, theater) to help advance their development as both student and lifelong performers.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior from Belvidere High School.
  • Must intend to participate in music or performing arts at college.
  • Must have a minimum of three years participation in a high school music or performing arts program.
  • Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
  • Must obtain one letter of recommendation from a teacher outside of the music/theater department.

Applicants are required to provide an essay stating what performing means to them, and what they intend to do with their education.


 

BHS Student Council Community Service

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.
  • Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college, or university.
  • Applicant has demonstrated good citizenship and has contributed to the welfare of the school, his or her classmates, and society.
  • Applicant must have completed community service hours outside of those provided by BHS or BHS extracurricular activities.

Applicants will be required to list all clubs or community service activities (inside or outside of school) they have participated in during their high school career and make a short statement that should include the following:

  • Their goals and future plans after high school.
  • Why they should be considered for this scholarship.
  • Choose a favorite community service project they participated in and describe why it was especially meaningful to them.

One letter of recommendation is required and must come from the organization where they spent most of their community service hours.


 

Blanche L. Dawson

The Blanche L. Dawson Nursing Scholarship was established to provide money to worthy young women who reside in Boone County for education and training in the nursing profession. After the first year award has been granted, you will be permitted to reapply each year thereafter for additional scholarship money. Information regarding this reapplication procedure will be presented to the recipient(s) of this scholarship during the Scholarship Night assembly or can be obtained from the Trust Department at Midland State Bank.

The re-application form details the required information and supporting documentation as well as the application deadline.

Applicants are required to list the following:

  • Reason for the interest in a nursing career.
  • Why they need this scholarship.
  • Address of school accepted by and cost per year for tuition and room and board.
  • Estimated yearly cost of tuition and room and board.

 


 

Blue Thunder Boosters

The Blue Thunder Booster Scholarship was established to support and encourage participation in sports activities at Belvidere North High School by raising funds that are distributed back into the various sports programs.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a senior athlete from Belvidere North High School who lettered in at least one sport during his or her high school career.
  • Must have applied for post-secondary study at an accredited trade school, college, or university.
  • Must have a parent who is a current member of the Blue Thunder Boosters and actively participating in fundraising activities/committees.

Applicants are required to describe how they and/or your parent(s) have participated in the fundraising activities/committees for Blue Thunder Boosters, how athletics and volunteering have enhanced their high school career, and give examples of community service through individual efforts or participation in school, church, or other initiatives. Response should be limited to 300 words or less.

Two letters of recommendation are also required: One from a teacher at Belvidere North High School and one from a Belvidere North High School coach who coached the applicant.


 

BNHS Music Boosters

The Belvidere North High School Music Boosters proudly offers scholarship opportunities for graduating seniors of the BNHS Music Department to help advance their development as both student and lifelong musicians.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior from Belvidere North High School.
  • Must intend to participate in post-secondary education (major or minor in music is not necessary).
  • Must have completed eight semesters in BNHS music program.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Must obtain one letter of recommendation from a teacher outside of the music department.

Applicants are required to submit an essay about what music means to them, and what their plans for your education are.


 

BNHS Student Council Service

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant must be a Belvidere North High School graduating senior.
  • Accepted by a college, university or trade school program.
  • Must have demonstrated involvement and leadership in school and community service activities.
  • Preference may be given to Student Council members, but Student Council membership is NOT required.

Applicants are required to share a short statement about what was the most significant school or community service project they participated in during high school. They should include their leadership role and why it was significant.


 

Boone County Arts Council - Visual Art

The Boone County Arts Council has established a scholarship from the proceeds of “Paint on State.” This is a yearly community event that celebrates the Visual Arts. This scholarship award is to assist in the payment of university or college fees.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Submit five (5) high resolution photographs of artwork.
  • 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Preference given to a student who will be enrolled in a Visual Arts program.

Applicant is required to share:

  • How this scholarship will benefit them.
  • How has art impacted their life and made them the person they are today?

 

Boone County Crime Stoppers

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior and pursuing a career in a crime-related field of study.

 

Boone County Drug Prevention Coalition

The Boone County Drug Prevention Coalition will be awarding two scholarships in total for District 100 schools in the amount of $500 each.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior with plans to attend college, technical or trade school or the U.S. military the semester following his or her high school graduation

Applicants are required to provide one letter of recommendation from teacher, employer, etc. (excluding relatives) and submit an essay (minimum of 500-words but no more than two pages, single spaced, Calibri font).

Essay must answer one of the prompts listed below:

  • How would you help a friend who was thinking of using drugs, alcohol or vapes OR who is struggling with an addiction to a substance?
  • What could you do within your community to discourage peers from trying drugs, alcohol or vapes?
  • How would you deal with social pressure to use drugs, alcohol or vapes? What are some positive activities to engage in to avoid using substances?
  • How have drugs, alcohol or vaping impacted your life? What have you learned from the experience?
  • If you could develop your own program to encourage your peers to avoid drugs, alcohol or vaping, what would you do?

 

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 Firemen’s Association Memorial

This scholarship was established in honor of all past and present Boone County Fire Protection District #2 members who have made this endowment a possibility.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • This scholarship is for students intending to major in a fire, EMS, or medical field.
  • Applicant must be a resident of Boone County for the past two (2) years.
  • Applicant must have a 2.5 GPA or higher.
  • Applicant must attend a personal interview if requested.
  • Scholarship is open to students who have a parent that is currently a firefighter or is a retired firefighter with District 2.
  • Scholarship must be redeemed within one calendar year from award date. If redeeming at a later date must notify the organization.
  • Must work three shifts at the Boone County Fair Firefighters Doughnut Stand the same year the scholarship is redeemed.

Applicants are required to include an essay of no more than 500 words describing themselves and stating why they should receive this award being sure to include their career goals and ambitions.


 

Boone County Gardeners of America

Requirements/Criteria:

  • The applicant must enroll for post-secondary study at an accredited trade school, junior college, or university and pursue a course of study in: Horticulture, Landscaping, Forestry, Floral Culture, Soil or Land Conservation, Environmental Science, or Botany.
  • Financial need and GPA will be considered. However, they are not the sole determining factors in the awarding of the scholarship.

Applicants are required to share tuition cost per year, what their career goals and how will this scholarship aid them in achieving these goals along with two references.


 

Boone County Realtors

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher and demonstrate a “need,” with consideration given to activities, participation, and career goals.
  • At the time of application for this scholarship applicant must have applied for postsecondary study at an accredited trade school, college, or university.
  • One letter of recommendation.

 

Boone County Republican

The Boone County Republican scholarship will be awarded to two students, typically one from each high school.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Be in good academic standing (as judged by the Scholarship Committee).
  • Be a supporter of the Republican Party.

Applicants are required to write a short (200-300 word) statement on their interest in the Republican Party, values of the Republican Party and how they can support the Republican Party.


 

Boone Retired Teachers Association

Boone Retired Teachers Association (BRTA), formed in 1994, is a chapter of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. The members of BRTA are awarding this local scholarship to three Boone County graduating seniors to encourage students entering into the education profession.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Pursue a career in education.
  • Financial need may be considered.
  • Must be accepted by an accredited college or university.

Applicants are required to write a statement of 100 works or less why they have chosen education as a career and explain how they plan to achieve their goals.


 

Boone County Veterans 1461 Auxiliary

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be accepted by an institution of higher learning. Preference will be given to an applicant attending Rock Valley College, Rockford University, trade or vocational school.
  • Applicant must have a family member/relative who is a veteran.

 

Branden Ramey Legacy

Branden Ramey was a 2001 graduate of Belvidere High School who went on to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. Branden's dream was to return to Belvidere High School and become a history teacher. Branden wanted to change lives here in his hometown.

Unfortunately, on November 8th 2004, at 22 years old, Branden gave the ultimate sacrifice of his life for our country. It is our hope to continue changing lives in our community in honor of Branden so his memory and sacrifice are never forgotten.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university.

Applicants are required to describe the impact Branden Ramey had on the Belvidere community as a person and as a member of the United States Marine Corps.

  • Must be pursuing a career in education.

Applicants are required to share why they're pursuing a career (at least 100 words but no more than 150) in education and how will this scholarship assist them with their goals and future plans. (150 words or less).


 

Branden Ramey Sports

Branden Ramey was a 2001 graduate of Belvidere High School who went on to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. Branden's dream was to return to Belvidere High School and become a history teacher. Branden wanted to change lives here in his hometown.

Unfortunately, on November 8th 2004, at 22 years old, Branden gave the ultimate sacrifice of his life for our country. It is our hope to continue changing lives in our community in honor of Branden so his memory and sacrifice are never forgotten.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.
  • Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university.
  • Must have participated in any sport during your high school career.

Applicants are required to share how your participation in sports prepared them for their future profession (at least 100 words, but no more than 150), and how will this scholarship assist them with your goals and future plans (at least 100 words, but no more than 150).


 

Clarence F. Gates

Awarded to an outstanding music student who will have registered with a school of higher learning in order to further his or her education in music.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be planning to further your education in music.

Applicants will be required to share the following:

  • List all music classes and how many years involved.
  • How they plan to continue their music studies in 100 words or less.

 

Coach Gary Lewis

The coaching career of Coach Lewis is marked with many great Coaches and players he had the pleasure of working with and building lifelong relationships. Coach Lewis spent 40 years coaching, it was his passion and love.

At 18 Coach Lewis started his coaching career with Kenrock Community Center Youth Program. Over the course of many years Coach Lewis coached at many local schools including Jefferson, East, Guilford, Belvidere North, Christian Life and Berean Baptist. He also spent a few years with Beloit college, with his last few years spent coaching semi-pro football in Wisconsin. Over the years he has taken his teams from ground up programs to playoffs and one State title. Coaching was not just an on-field practice for Coach Lewis, his belief was that all things taught on the field should flow over to everyday life and he spent many hours mentoring players to be the best they could. God, family and football were all taught on and off the field.

Coach Lewis supported his family with a full-time job, while coaching and working on his bachelor’s degree at the same time. Two things remained on his football bucket list, his dream job of coaching college football and to get five minutes to pick the brain of Coach Bill Belichick of the Patriots.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must have played high school football for two or more years
  • Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
  • Committing to a community college or 4-year university in the upcoming fall (playing college football is NOT a requirement)
  • One letter of recommendation from a coach or teacher

 

Colton J Gritzmacher Memorial

This scholarship fund is in the loving memory of Colton J Gritzmacher. Colton was a 2016 graduate of Belvidere North High School. Colton had several passions in his life: his family, helping others, the outdoors, and fire science.

Colton’s goal was to become a career firefighter in our local community. During his junior andsenior years of high school, Colton enrolled and attended dual credit classes related to Fire Science offered through our local junior college. Upon graduation, Colton joined the Boone County Fire Protection District #2 and served as an active member until his sudden death on August 28, 2020, at the age of 23.

He will be remembered by those that knew him as a caring, friendly, helpful, and hardworking young man that always had a smile on his face.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior attending any college/university or fire science institute with an emphasis in Fire Science.
  • Involvement in extracurricular and/or community activities
  • High standards of personal conduct, character, and integrity.
  • Pursuing a full or part time career in Fire Science

Applicant will be required to obtain two letters of recommendation from non relatives who are members of their community and who can attest to their character, school and/or community involvement and potential for future success.


 

Cosmopolitan Club of Belvidere

The Cosmopolitan Club of Belvidere is a group of well-respected, business professionals in Boone County who join together to better the community through social service. Club membership consists of business leaders in diverse sectors of the community. The club comes together, as part of Cosmopolitan International, to fund many worthwhile programs with three major initiatives in mind: children, elderly and diabetes education.

Through the roasted corn sales at the Boone County Fair and proceeds from our annual golf outing, the Cosmo Club of Belvidere donates more than $25,000 annually to the community.

The Cosmo Scholarship provides financial assistance to graduating high school students pursuing advanced training and/or certification. 

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior with plans to attend 2 or 4 year college or university, tech school or trade school. (Certifications and training could include but are not limited to: Electrician, Hairstylist, Coder, Real Estate Agent, Copywriter, Firefighter, Flight Attendant, Optician, or Paralegal.)

When applying, applicants should number and type their responses to each question question/statement:

  1. Explain your desire to enter the industry you are interested in (one paragraph maximum).
  2. Explain why you think you should be awarded the Cosmo Scholarship (one paragraph maximum).
  3. Describe any volunteer activities, extracurricular or community involvement. List duties performed and years involved.
  4. Please write which income tier your family would be categorized in (please use gross income).
    • Tier 1: $0-$25,000
    • Tier 2: $25,001-$50,000
    • Tier 3: $50,001-$75,000
    • Tier 4: $75,001-$100,000
    • Tier 5: $100,001-$125,000
    • Tier 6: $125,001 and above

D. Elvin Brown

D. Elvin Brown was a very progressive farmer in Caledonia Township. He was always interested and active in the community with many contributions. He served as president of the Boone County Farm Bureau and the Boone County Soil Conservation District. When District 100 was being formed, he became an influential spokesman in encouraging Caledonia Township to
support the concept. The D. Elvin Brown Scholarship was established by Milton R. Brown, to honor his contributions
to this community. This scholarship for $3,000 is presented annually to an outstanding Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School graduating senior who is enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university in their College of Agricultural and Life Sciences or College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences curriculum.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant is attending an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Majoring in Agriculture or Food Science. If no senior is majoring in these fields it will be awarded to a senior majoring in Information Technology.
  • Preference will be given to a child of a farmer.

Applicants are required to share their reasons for pursuing an Agricultural Sciences college degree and why they'd like to be considered for this scholarship.


 

Dave Graham Memorial

Dave Graham was a history teacher, librarian and golf coach in District 100. As a lifelong learner and proponent of the value of education, Dave’s legacy is to help future educators fulfill their dreams. Two recipients will be chosen from Boone County.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Rank in upper half of class or top half of SAT or ACT scores for class.
  • Must pursue a career in education.
  • Accepted to an accredited college or university.

Applicants are required to share a statement of 100 words or less on why they have chosen education as a career and explain how they plan to achieve their goals.


 

Dennis Sturges Memorial

Dennis was a dedicated Sergeant with the Boone County Sheriffś department for 30 years after graduating from Belvidere High School. His family has established this scholarship in his memory for a deserving Senior interested in serving their community in the area of criminal justice.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior of Belvidere High School.
  • Must be pursuing a career in Criminal Justice
  • Must be in the upper 50% of class with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
  • Must be accepted into an accredited college or university.

Applicants are required to write about:

  • Why they're choosing the Criminal Justice field.
  • What qualities they possess that would make them a good fit for this field.
  • Examples of ways they have served the community.
  • Their need for financial assistance.

 

District 100 Charitable Foundation

This scholarship is created to benefit a student pursuing a certificate, license, or two-year degree from an accredited school. Examples may include, but are not limited to: automotive technology, aviation maintenance technology, cosmetology, dental hygiene, early childhood education, fire science, manufacturing technology, massage therapy, nursing aide, personal training, welding, and more.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant must be planning to enroll in a program that will lead to a certificate, license, or two-year degree.

Applicant is required to include an essay of no more than 500 words that addresses the following:

  • How their education at BHS or BNHS contributed to who they are today
  • A special attribute or accomplishment that sets themselves apart
  • Why they're are a good candidate to receive this award, including the impact this scholarship would have on their future

 

Frederick and Agnes Simon Music

Frederick V. Simon was the band director at Belvidere Junior High School from 1950 until he retired in 1974. As a reflection of their interest in and support of the music programs in Belvidere School District 100, Frederick and Agnes Simon established a scholarship to assist students who plan to attend a college or university.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be accepted by a 2-year or 4-year university or college.
  • Must be a talented instrumentalist, vocalist, or pianist.

Applicant must include a statement of 100-200 words describing their involvement in music, what it has meant to them, and how they will continue to involve music in their life.


 

Frederick Simon Physics & Math

Frederick V. Simon was the band director at Belvidere Junior High School from 1950 until his retirement in 1974. His passion was music, but he also had a strong interest in the fields of physics and advanced mathematics. Mr. Simon established a scholarship to assist graduating seniors who will pursue a degree in physics or a math-related field.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior of Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School who has completed four (4) years of science or math classes with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must be accepted by a university or college with a declared major involving physics or math.

Applicant must include a statement of 100-200 words describing their involvement in physics and math, what it has meant to them, and how they will continue to involve physics and math in their life.


 

Harold H. & Marjorie L. Pratt Memorial

The late Harold H. and Marjorie L. Pratt established this scholarship to assist worthy young men and women in attending the college of their choice.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college/university, or technical school.
  • Student shall have demonstrated academic achievements necessary to predict success in college.
  • Preference may be given to a student demonstrating financial need- as shown on the SAR report that you receive after completing the FAFSA.

Applicants are required to include a statement about their academic achievements and explain how these achievements will assure the success of their future education and career goals.


 

Hugh K. & Alice Iles Funderburg

The Funderburg legacy of community investment, support, financial benevolence, and goodwill is threaded throughout Boone County history. The generosity of Hugh K. and Alice Iles Funderburg will live on as the descendants of R. Robert and Sally D. Funderburg have set up this scholarship in their memory. By endowing this scholarship program, the donors intend to continue to help the Boone County Community and its residents succeed and to promote entrepreneurship at Belvidere and Belvidere North High Schools.

Two eligible applicants will be awarded the amount of $10,000 each.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a senior in a District 100 school.
  • Scholarship applicants must have an GPA score in the top 25% of their high school class.
  • Scholarship applicants must have accepted entrance as a full-time student at an accredited four-year undergraduate college, where he or she is enrolled in the college’s business school or intends to major in business or a related field of study.
  • Scholarship applicants must demonstrate active involvement in the Boone County community and/or substantial participation in school extracurricular activities and/or sports.
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit through academic, community or other endeavors.
  • Scholarship applicants have the option of providing a statement of financial need, but financial need will not be determinative in the selection process.

Applicants are required to submit a minimum of one recommendation and/or reference from a professional, and a maximum 200-word essay explaining their interest in the business field for their course of study.

All finalists must be willing to do an interview with the Boone County Community Foundation.


 

Isabel Mullen Arts

One $500 scholarship will be given to a Belvidere High School senior or a Belvidere North High School senior. This arts scholarship is administered by the Belvidere Woman's Club.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Plan to major in one field of the arts; graphic art, music (vocal or instrumental), drama, or dance.
  • Must be accepted by an accredited college or university.
  • Must be in the upper 1/2 of their class.

Applicants should also share:

  • All activities and awards in the field of art, music, drama or dance while in high school.
  • How this award will help them in achieving their educational goals.

 

James and Joretta Chambers

James and Joretta Chambers believe in the power of education. Both graduated from the University of Illinois. James graduated with a degree in engineering and Joretta graduated with a degree in home economics. They believe that the knowledge and skills gained from their education set them up for success in their life and community. They established this scholarship to help support and provide students with similar opportunities.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior in a District 100 school
  • Must be a declared engineering major or be pursuing any engineering field of study leading to a degree in the engineering field.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in or intending to enroll in any college or university located in the state of Illinois.
  • Applicants must have and maintain a “B” average. 3.0 GPA

Financial need is not a prerequisite but can be a consideration. Students applying may add a financial statement to their application essay.

Applicants are required to include an essay, no more than 300 words, describing why they are pursuing a degree in engineering and what they plan to achieve with their degree.


 

Janet Hack Memorial

The Janet Hack Memorial Scholarship fund was established to provide financial assistance to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in a math, music, education, or counseling related field of study.

Janet Hack was a former math teacher at Belvidere High school. Prior to teaching at BHS, Janet was a counselor at a community college. Janet loved music and was a talented organist. Janet had a great regard for the social and emotional needs of her students and taught with a fun loving and clever sense of humor.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must intend to major in math, music, education or counseling related field while in college.
  • Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college, or university.

 

Jerry Parsons' Coon Creek Casters

Gerald Parsons was a charter member of the Coon Creek Casters, which was formed in 1983. After his passing, the organization renamed the scholarship in his memory. The Coon Creek Casters is a non-profit organization that promotes the sport of fishing and the field of conservation. Throughout the years, the Coon Creek Casters have educated the youth and community by promoting, sponsoring and donating to organizations in need.

The Coon Creek Caster scholarship is in the amount of $1,000, and will go to one qualifying senior from Belvidere High School and one qualifying senior from Belvidere North High School. 

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Be a graduating senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Must be pursuing a college program at a U.S. accredited college or university in the field of Forestry & Conservation, Teaching, Nursing, or Health Sciences.
  • One letter of recommendation.

Applicants are also required to share, in 275 words or less:

  • What their academic and career goals are.
  • Describe a personal challenge they have faced and what they've learned and/or would do differently.
  • Describe a community service experience they've had. How did it benefit others? What major things they learned about themselves.
  • Describe their family upbringing and work ethics and how have they've influenced their academic and personal goals in life.

Recipient must agree to participate in Kirkland’s Fourth of July parade and the Heritage Days parade in Belvidere as a representative of the Coon Creek Casters. Recipient must also agree to provide a photo for use in promoting the organization’s annual banquet.


 

Jim Turner FFA Memorial

Jim Turner was a member of F.F.A. for four years and held a state office. Preference may be given to students pursuing a career in an agriculture-related field.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must have been a member in F.F.A. for at least two years.
  • Must be involved in community service.

Applicants are also required to share:

  • How their experience in F.F.A. helped them prepare for their future?
  • What are their plans for the future?

Applicants are required to submit a short essay outlining their community service involvement.


 

Margery L. Hinrichs

Marjorie was a long-time librarian at Belvidere High School and wished to recognize students who are both active in sports and good academic students at Belvidere High School with this scholarship fund created at the time of her death. This scholarship is given to senior athletes at Belvidere High School who demonstrate athletic skills, academic skills, good character, and are pursuing a post high school education at an accredited college or university upon graduation. Coaches at Belvidere High School make the nominations for this scholarship.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a senior athlete from Belvidere High School with a coach’s nomination.
  • Must have applied for post-secondary study at an accredited college or university.

 

Marie Louise Hunt

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be planning to major in music.

Applicants are required to share the following:

  • List all music classes they have taken and how many years involved.
  • Have they taken private lessons? If so, list the instrument(s) and for how long.
  • Which area of music they're planning to study?
  • Name of the college they hope to attend and if they've been accepted.
  • A short essay stating why they're planning to make music their career

Applicants are also required to have two letters of recommendation.


 

Marilyn Turner Memorial

Marilyn Turner was a registered nurse, having graduated from Evanston Hospital at Northwestern. She volunteered at the Boone County Health Department for 25 years and this scholarship is for students seeking a degree in nursing.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must have been accepted into an accredited 4-year nursing program.
  • Must be involved in community service.

Applicants are required to share why they've chosen to seek a degree in nursing and a short essay outlining their community service involvement.


 

Marjorie Carroll Johnson

The Marjorie Carroll Johnson scholarship was established in 1987 to recognize a Boone County high school senior who had excelled in public speaking or performance. Owen M. Johnson was born in 1901 and raised on a farm in Boone County. In 1927, he married Marjorie Carroll, whom he had met when they were classmates at the University for Chicago’s Law School. While few women attended law schools in those days, Marjorie Carroll had excelled at debate competitions while a student at Huron College in South Dakota and at the University of Southern California, as well as during her studies at the Chicago law school. The Johnsons started their legal careers in Chicago, he working for a large bank and a law firm, she working as a law clerk to judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals.

In 1935, the Johnsons moved to Belvidere, where they remained for over 50 years, during most of that time practicing law together. Both were very active in the community, serving on public boards and their churches. They also maintained a much-loved residence adjoining the family farm south of Capron on which Mr. Johnson had been raised. Their three children attended Belvidere schools and went on to achieve success in college and professionally.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Be accepted into a 4-year college/university
  • Have a grade point average of 3.7 or above
  • Excel in public speaking or performance. Including but not limited to student government, debate/speech, drama, vocal or instrumental performances.

Applicants are required to provide an essay of 300 words or less describing their public speaking or performance experiences, their goals, and future plans.


 

May O. Kelly Memorial

The recipient will be a District 100 graduate who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship.

Requirement/Criteria:

Applicant must be attending the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Rockford University, Purdue University, or Northern Illinois University.


 

Michael J. Bergman

Michael Bergman was a Belvidere High School graduate who played football and baseball for the Bucs. He thoroughly enjoyed all sports as well as hunting and fishing. Michael had strong family ties and a multitude of very close friends. Michael drowned during a fishing trip in Canada in 1993.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be an athlete from District 100 who participated in at least one sport in their senior year.
  • Each year one of the recipients must be a football player.
  • Must have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must be considered a good citizen in and out of school.
  • Special consideration will be given to those students who enjoy the friendship of their fellow students and are a positive influence on those friends.
  • Must attend college in order to receive the scholarship.

Applicant is required to list all sports and years of participation.


 

Mike Hearn Memorial Football

The Mike Hearn Memorial Football Scholarship is available to a high school senior that graduated from BHS and played at least 1 year of varsity football. Coach Hearn was a Driver's Ed teacher and football coach at BHS for 36 years. He was a firm believer that football was more than wins and losses - it was about the life long lessons learned on and off the field. Coach Hearn was inducted into the IHSA Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2013.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Graduating senior from Belvidere High School
  • Must have played at least 1 year of varsity football at BHS
  • Accepted by a 2 or 4 year college
  • Must exemplify strong leadership and character in and out of school
  • Be involved in Community Service

Applicants are required to submit an essay outlining their community service involvement and two letters of recommendation with at least one letter from a current teacher or coach.


 

Nicholas Breckenridge Memorial

The Nicholas Breckenridge Memorial Scholarship is available for a Belvidere High School senior who participated in band throughout high school and will attend a 2-year or 4-year college. Nick graduated with honors from Belvidere High School in 2003 and participated in band, golf, and tennis throughout his high school years.

This scholarship will be limited to students who participated in band throughout high school. Academic and extracurricular
activities will be considered.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.
  • Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college.
  • Must have participated in a band program at Belvidere High School.
  • Preference given to participation in extracurricular activities and the student’s academic achievements.

Applicants are required to:

  • List ensembles and instruments played throughout your high school career.
  • State their goals and what field they intend to pursue in college (1/2 to 1 page)

 

North Boone Fire District #3 Firemen’s Association - Jake Schoepski

Jake Schoepski was a dedicated firefighter for the North Boone Fire Protection District #3 for 48 years and also served as a trustee for 25 years. In his memory, the NBFPD#3 Firemen’s Association is awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior who is interested in pursuing a career in firefighting, EMS, medical, police or other first responder field.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a Belvidere North High School graduating senior.
  • Must live in Boone County.
  • Must be interested in pursuing a career in firefighting, EMS, medical, police or other first responder field.
  • Must be willing to attend a personal interview if requested.

Applicants are required to submit an essay 300 words or less stating how a first responder has affected the applicant's life or
share why they are pursuing a career in firefighting, EMS, medical, police or other first responder type profession. Applicants should include their goals, and how the scholarship would aid in achieving those goals.


 

Northern Illinois Vintage Tractor and Engine Association

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a career in any agriculture-related field. 

Applicant will be required to explain why they have chosen the agriculture field and how this scholarship can help them achieve their career goals.


 

Olney and Jeane Witbeck

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Preference will be given to young men or young women who have lived on a farm within Boone County, Illinois, and who have shown qualities of leadership.

Applicants are required to write a statement detailing any leadership roles they have assumed during high school and whether they ever lived or work on a farm.

Panhellenic Society - Elisabeth Seegmiller

The Panhellenic Society of Belvidere is composed of university women who, during their college lives, were members of various national sororities. These area women are dedicated to the attainment of higher education and annually offer these local scholarships.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Female
  • Accepted by a 4-year college or university
  • Must have 3.0 GPA or higher.

Applicants are required to submit an answer to one of the following two questions in essay form:

  • Who or what in their life has been their biggest influence and why.
  • Discuss a special attribute or accomplishment that sets themselves apart.

 

Pheasants Forever

Pheasants Forever is a national conservation organization that focuses on protecting and improving habitat mainly for Pheasants, which in turn also helps many other species. Pheasants Forever has over 700 local chapters who each raise money locally to help conservation efforts at the national, state, and most importantly at the local level.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • A 2 or 4 year college or university, tech school, any type of trade school, or apprenticeship program
  • Be involved in outdoor activities and be a responsible participant in the environment.

Applicants are required to write at statement of a minimum of 400 words highlighting the following:

  • Describe in detail their favorite outdoor memory that revolves around an activity such as fishing, hunting, camping, Boy or Girl Scouts, 4-H, FFA, or conservation/habitat restoration work.
  • Explain the significance of this memory and why they consider it so important.
  • Pheasants Forever's mission is to conserve pheasants, quail, and other wildlife through habitat improvements, public access, education, and conservation advocacy.  With this in mind tell us what role they envision the outdoors and outdoor activities playing in their future.  Also, how they will help in this mission.  What will they do in their lifetime to help respect, protect, and improve nature so that future generations of young people will get to enjoy great outdoor memories like they have had?  

 

Poplar Grove Lions Club

Founded in 1961, the Poplar Grove Lions Club is one of the oldest chapters in Illinois. The Poplar Grove Lions created, built, and maintain Lions Park in Poplar Grove, a nearly 14-acre park open to the public. The Poplar Grove Lions partner with local organizations, local government, and neighbors to enhance the quality of life in Boone County. They continue that mission by providing scholarships to Boone County graduating seniors.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a Belvidere North High School graduating senior.
  • Seeking post-graduate education (including, but not limited to college, junior college, trade or vocational schools.
  • ACT scores will be considered.
  • Participation in extracurricular activities, volunteer projects, and community service is extremely important and will be considered accordingly.

Provide an explanation of how their participation in community service, volunteer work, or service projects impacted their life and shaped their future goals and plans. Describe any association with, connection to, and/or participation in any Lions Club events.

While important, a connection to the Poplar Grove Lions Club or any other Lions Club is not necessary to apply for this scholarship.


 

Preston Trush Magnuson

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant must have attended Kishwaukee Elementary School in Garden Prairie.

Applicants are required to write about what grade(s) they attended at Kishwaukee Elementary School, and in what manner this award with aid them in achieving your educational goals.


 

Richard Koceja Random Acts of Kindness

The Richard Koceja Random Acts of Kindness Memorial Scholarship honors a man who loved education and helping high school and college students. Since he didn't have a high school diploma, he pushed for younger generations not to follow in his footsteps. This scholarship was created so every student would be eligible, the only requirement being that they continue their education after high school, and that they are focused on helping others. One random act of kindness is all it takes to be recognized and to receive a random act of kindness in return.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Students will nominate a classmate who has shown random acts of kindness.
  • Submit a letter that includes the name of the student you're nominating and explain why they deserve this scholarship and any "random acts of kindness" you've witnessed.  This letter should also include your relationship to the student.  No family members, please.

 

Rob Salley

Rob graduated from BHS in 1990. He went on to college to become a teacher like his parents Brad and Judy Salley. He taught in the Belvidere school district for 25 years. Rob loved his family and had many wonderful friends. Rob enjoyed many sports and especially enjoyed coaching.

Rob had a tremendous impact on the community, his students and athletes. In honor of Rob, and the Belvidere Bucs two scholarships will be presented each year to a Belvidere High School male and female athlete.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.
  • Participated in at least one sport senior year.
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Applicant must have a positive impact on their community and those around them.
  • Applicant must continue their education in either a 2 or 4 year college/university or trade school.

Applicant is also required to write about how their personal experiences have had a positive impact on the community and those around them.


 

Robert L. Tripke Industrial Arts

Robert L. Tripke was an excellent carpenter and woodworker. The Robert L. Tripke Industrial Arts Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to a graduating senior who best exemplifies the following: character, academic achievement, financial need and a desire to succeed in the vocation of Industrial Arts.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must have a GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Must be accepted into a college or trade program focusing on the Industrial Arts.
  • Must exemplify excellent character.
  • Graduate must demonstrate the financial need for the scholarship.

 

Solutions Bank

Solutions Bank will be awarding scholarship funds to several local high school graduates who will begin work toward an associates degree, certificate or bachelor's degree in the fall semester following their graduation.

Recipients will be chosen based on their academic record, extracurricular and community involvement, leadership records, well-defined educational goals and personal references.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Applicant must provide two letters of recommendation from someone who can speak about their academics, character or extracurricular/community activities.

 

Thomas F. Schoepski

Thomas F Schoepski was raised in Boone County most of his 83 years. When he returned from China in World War II he began working for Maynard H Thorpe, learning the bricklaying and plastering trade. At that time there was a building boom for housing construction and while at work Tom also learned other skills in the construction of a house, electrical wiring, plumbing, and heating trades. When he went into business for himself he hired young men in the summer
to assist him, in the process helping them to learn something about building and the skills needed.

Tom's grand aunt, Glenn Olds Pettey, was the Organizing Secretary for the Asa Cottrell Chapter, NSDAR, organized March 25, 1921. For this reason the Asa Cottrell Chapter would like to fund and create a technical/ skills scholarship for a graduating senior going into one of the trades in Thomas F Schoepski's name. It will be awarded each year to help a qualifying graduating senior from Belvidere and Belvidere North High Schools achieve their skills.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must provide proof of enrollment in a program prior to receiving funds.
  • Recipient chosen by school faculty and approved by Asa Cottrell Scholarship Chairman

 

Wilbur & William Cummings Memorial

Wilbur and William Cummings were twin brothers and lifelong residents of Caledonia, IL. They were active members in the Caledonia Congregational Church, the North Boone Fire Department, the Belvidere Moose Lodge, and both worked at the Belford Theater for 27 years.

After Wilbur lost his arm in a farming accident in 1953, he was treated by a doctor in nearby Caledonia. Both brothers attributed having a physician close by to saving Wilbur’s life. The incident had an incredible impact on Wilbur and William. They valued and saw the importance of education and wanted to provide scholarship opportunities for young men and women interested in furthering their education. As a reflection of their lifelong interest in and support of District 100, Wilbur and William Cummings established a scholarship to assist Belvidere and Belvidere North High School graduates who intend to enter the field of public education.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be a current resident of Boone County, Illinois.
  • Must have been accepted by a 4-year university or college with a declared major in education.
  • Must be able to demonstrate charitable or civic activities and community service in Boone County.
  • Financial need is not a prerequisite but a consideration.

Applicants are required to describe the qualities of a teacher and why they want to obtain a teaching degree, in 200 words or less.


 

Wilbur Mong

Wilbur Mong was a science teacher at Belvidere High school for 29 years.  During that time, he taught physics, chemistry and also served as department chairman.  Mr. Mong was also well known for his hobby, which was beekeeping.

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must have completed four years of science with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Must intend to pursue a career in science or science related field of study.

 

Women's Garden Club of America

This scholarship is for horticulture, forestry, agriculture, natural resources and environmental studies. 

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Must be accepted by an accredited college or university and pursing study in a related field.

 

Zonta Club - Vanessa M. Werth Memorial

Requirements/Criteria:

  • Female
  • Must be accepted by an accredited college or university
  • Top 25% of class
  • One letter of recommendation

Applicants are also required to:

  • Include specifics about church/community involvement
  • A list of ages of any siblings you have (if applicable)
  • An essay that addresses what they intend to accomplish in the next five years, and how they intend to incorporate community service activities/projects into these plans.
