Special Education

The mission of Belvidere Community Unit School District 100 is to help all students achieve personal excellence by becoming lifelong learners, innovators, and contributors to society. The Special Education Department aligns its core values and beliefs with the mission by ensuring comprehensive special education services are identified through the Child Find process and eligibility determination based on individual student needs.

We provide a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) to eligible students with disabilities in accordance with state and federal mandates. Every attempt is made to educate students with special education needs in the least restrictive educational environment (LRE), stressing inclusive and welcoming learning environments in order to promote every student’s growth and success. Our belief is that integration of special education students into general education classes; while providing appropriate needs-based services, accommodations, modifications, and supplementary aids warrants their access to general education curriculum and peer models. The Least Restrictive Environment ensures that students with disabilities are educated to the maximum extent possible with students who are not disabled.

We offer a continuum of special education and related services designed to meet the individualized needs of students ages 3 through 21 who are identified as having a disability and who are eligible for special education services.

Students with disabilities may receive services exclusively in the general education classroom or within a residential setting, with many other options in between. Services and support are individually designed by the IEP team and aligned to the educational needs of the student, keeping the Least Restrictive Environment at the forefront of the decision making.

District 100 Special Education Department is responsible for identifying, locating and evaluating children who may be in need of special education services. This process is called Child Find. The Child Find process may be initiated by the school staff or parents if a disability is suspected.
