Adaptive Behavior Communication (A.B.C.)

Our ABC (Adaptive, Behavior, Communication) Program is designed to provide a nurturing, structured, and individualized educational environment for students with significant needs in their adaptive, behavior, and communication skills. Students may present with needs related to limited social skills, behavior rigidity,  communication challenges, and sensory dysregulation. This special education classroom is rooted in a belief that every student can succeed with the right support. The program focuses on building students’ functional skills with positive strategies using a variety of methods.

Students benefit from small class sizes, personalized instruction, and a team of dedicated professionals, including a special education teacher, social worker, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, and support staff, who collaborate to meet each child’s unique needs. Our curriculum aligns with state standards while integrating some essential elements of the Common Core throughout the school day, depending on each student’s instructional level.  Special Education teams hold IEP meetings with families to review data and determine appropriate supports for each individual student.

The program emphasizes positive reinforcement, helping students develop pre-academic/academic skills, classroom readiness, self-regulation skills, and communication. Through consistent support and family partnerships, we aim to empower students to thrive both in school and beyond.

Information to know:

  • Students follow individualized structured schedules.
  • Direct instruction is provided by a special education teacher through whole group instruction, centers, and individualized tasks.
  • Additional visuals, breaks, sensory supports, and multiple modes of communication are utilized within the classroom.
  • Related services (speech and language therapy, social work, occupational therapy) provide support based on student needs.
  • Additional adult support is incorporated within each classroom.
  • Positive behavior supports are embedded within each classroom.
  • Students participate in portions of the day with general education classes as they are able (lunch, recess, art, music, P.E., morning meetings, and academics as appropriate).

We are proud to offer a safe, inclusive space where students are understood, supported, and celebrated for their progress, no matter where their starting point may be.
