Artificial Guidance (AI)
Purpose
This guidance is created to capture our school district’s principles and values regarding the use of AI in our schools. These are identified to promote that AI is used in District 100 to enhance student learning experiences and teacher efficacy, and to optimize resource allocation in alignment with existing policies and procedures regarding use of technology, data protection, academic integrity, and student support.
What is AI?
“Artificial intelligence” or “AI” is intelligence demonstrated by computers, as opposed to human intelligence. “Intelligence” encompasses the ability to learn, reason, generalize, and infer meaning. Examples of AI technology include ChatGPT and other chatbots and large language models.
Strategic Integration Of AI
This guidance is designed to support the district’s mission as identified in the strategic plan: cultivate academic success so that our students become lifelong learners, innovators, and contributors to society.
AI will be integrated in learning experiences in order to support student growth in all domains of the “Graduate Portrait”
- Adaptable, Healthy & Resilient Learners
- Civic & Global Contributors
- College/Career Ready
- Creative Problem Solvers
- Critical Thinkers
- Empowered & Self-Sufficient
- Engaged and Inspired
- Personally Responsible Skilled
- Communicators
Guiding Principals
The following guiding principles will be used so that the integration of AI supports the realization of the mission, vision, and goals of the district’s strategic plan:
- Adaptability & Perseverance: Students should be prepared for an ever-evolving economy and society by learning about and how to use emerging technology.
- Critical Thinking: Active engagement with and critical evaluation of content generated by AI tools is necessary. AI should be used as a tool, not a replacement for human thought. AI has limitations and biases that should be understood and considered.
- Safety & Transparency: Information that is shared with and retrieved from district approved AI tools should be done so in a manner that promotes data integrity/security and transparent use of AI.
- Ethics: Students and staff should be aware of the ethical implications of AI use to include giving credit where credit is due.
- Technology Literacy: The skills to navigate current and emerging tools need to be identified and intentionally taught.
- Creativity and Curiosity: AI tools foster creativity and offer endless teaching and learning opportunities.
Responsible Use of AI Tools
Just as calculators and the internet have enhanced learning, AI tools will be a valuable resource for students and staff when used responsibly.
- Any use of AI must adhere to existing board policy, acceptable use policy and the student/parent handbook: (Use of AI for Coursework).
- Appropriate AI use should be guided by the specific parameters and objectives defined for an activity.
- Teachers have discretion to determine how AI is integrated into learning experiences, reference this continuum (staff) and this flowchart (students).
- This document provides examples of responsible uses of AI.
Prohibited Use of AI Tools
The use of AI creates risk that must be mitigated as it is integrated into schools. This document provides examples of prohibited uses of AI. The list is not all-encompassing and there may be other potential misuses that are not listed but are equally significant and should be avoided.
Security and Privacy
The district is committed to protecting the security and privacy of student and staff data. All AI systems utilized within the school must be evaluated for compliance with relevant laws and regulations, including those related to data protection, privacy, and students’ online safety. Staff and students are prohibited from entering confidential or personally identifiable information (including names, ID numbers, email or home addresses) into unauthorized AI tools, such as those without approved data privacy agreements.
By following this guidance, the district can ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically to enhance learning and innovation. This guidance will be reviewed and updated on an annual basis to ensure policies are relevant and reflect new insights and developments.
