Inclement Weather
As we approach the winter season and the possibility of inclement weather, here is a reminder of our procedures when determining to close school due to weather and also how you will be notified.
Because it can be challenging for students and families to extend the school year, our Board of Education approved a Remote/E-Learning Plan giving us the option of a remote learning day for students. It is our intention to have the first emergency/snow day be a day of no school/no remote learning for students. Following the first emergency/snow day, we will provide the potential remote learning day for students. Any emergency/snow day that is not a remote learning day (up to 5 days), will have to be made up at the end of the school year. Our full calendar, including emergency days, can be found here.
Communication of school closings or remote learning days will occur as soon as possible; we will attempt to notify families the night before if possible, but notifications will often occur in the morning once we have a better idea of the conditions. In the case of a winter storm or wind chill warning, we will typically make the choice to close schools for the safety of students, staff and families. In the case of a winter weather advisory or wind chill advisory, we will typically keep schools open. Families always have the option to keep a child home from school if there is a concern for that child's safety or individual circumstance. In any case, we encourage families to plan for the potential of school closings. In the event schools are closed or we have a remote learning day, the following will occur:
-
All activities, including before and aftercare programs, will be canceled.
-
Transportation for students in specialized programs outside of the District will be canceled.
-
All District buildings will be closed to the public.
Here’s How You Will Be Notified of Weather-Related School Closures or Remote Learning Days:
- ParentSquare notification by email, text and phone to parents/guardians, staff and students.
- Community members can receive these notifications, too! Join our "School Closing" ParentSquare community group here.
- Local television news stations for alerts
-

When Hazardous Weather Threatens:
-
The Superintendent will consider input from the Operations Director, Transportation Services, area superintendents, and information from local meteorologists and online weather resources. While there's no official temperature that closes schools, several factors will be considered, including road conditions.
-
The District must make one decision that is appropriate for more than 7,500 students and 1,500 staff members. We recognize that this decision may not always fit with individual circumstances.
If schools remain open and you decide to keep your child home because of the weather, please contact your child's school.
